The best environmental and sustainability projects in Romania were awarded on Thursday, 20 January, at the first edition of the Green Report Gala – “The 12th Hour”, the most prestigious annual event dedicated to the recognition of sustainability initiatives carried out in Romania by companies, public institutions or individuals.

The Green Report Gala is an unprecedented project in the field of environmental issues in Romania and aims to recognise and reward local merits of companies, authorities and public individuals in the fight against global environmental threats.

For the transition to sustainability to be successful, it is essential to recognise and reward performance in this area, precisely in order to encourage and stimulate other relevant initiatives, both to protect the environment and people.

Based on a clear and transparent mechanism, the 74 projects entered in the 11 categories of the Green Report competition were evaluated by a jury composed of environmental and sustainability specialists: Ramona Jurubiță, Country Managing Partner, KPMG Romania, Marius Brînzea, Strategy Director, Reciclad’OR, Andreea Mitiriță, Partner, Tax Consultancy, PwC Romania, Laura Ciobanu, Manager, Climate Change and Sustainability, EY Romania, Alexandra Zbuchea, Conf.PhD, Dean, Faculty of Management, SNSPA, and Mihai Moia, Executive Director, ROENEF.

Barna Tanczos, Minister for the Environment, Water and Forests, said: “We welcome the initiative of Green Report, which with this first gala – “The 12th hOUR” – beyond its awards reminds us that we have a huge duty to fulfil: saving the environment. This is the duty of every citizen of this planet, but as we know, the power of example counts for a lot. If we reward a company for having succeeded, through its business philosophy, in coming up with a sustainable project that protects the environment, its resources, surely others will follow the power of this example. Equally important is to highlight the projects of those local authorities that have led to a cleaner development of a locality, whether we are talking about clean transport or energy efficiency or a new approach, subject to the principles of sustainability, to the development of an area, and I am convinced that their success will inspire others.”

Raluca Fișer, President of Green Revolution Association said With 15 years of activity, Green Report has stood out over time as a leader on environmental and sustainability issues, witnessing the dramatic evolution of humanity throughout this period. If when we started writing we were talking about climate change, today we are witnessing the effects of the climate crisis. That is why it is important to act now, even in the ’12th hour’, and why it is equally important to recognise the merits of those who are making a difference and who, in addition to innovation and commitment, have integrated sustainability into their business plan. Recognising and rewarding sustainability performance in Romania is important precisely in order to encourage and stimulate other initiatives relevant to both the environment and people.”

At the first edition of the Green Report Gala, which took place on 20 January, the following were awarded:

Ateliere Senza Frontiere – Award for EXCELLENCE IN AGRI-FOOD

Ciugud Commune – Award for EXCELLENCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL CAMPAIGNS

Marius Brînzea, Reciclad`OR strategy director, said The judging process only considered projects that reflected the concept of the Circular Economy, i.e. production and consumption patterns that involve sharing, refurbishing, reusing resources and materials as much as possible. Eligible projects were determined by how they reflected aspects of circular design, the degree of usefulness by keeping materials and products in the economic cycle as much as possible, the degree to which they contributed to the regeneration of natural systems, and last but not least the innovation and complexity of the projects, as well as how the information was written into the project and argued. The winners were decided based on the specific indicators at each stage of the value chain and the results that were communicated in the project. Many projects were entered in this category, which shows that the industrialisation of the circular economy concept is slowly starting to become a reality in Romania. The winners represent two totally different entities, which shows that the road to a circular economy is a collective effort.
